Frequently Asked Questions
We love your enthusiasm and curiosity about sea swimming. Here are answers to some frequently asked questions.
Q) How is swimming in the sea different from swimming in the pool?
No walls, no lanes, no ropes, just you and your instructor in the calm, warm embrace of the Arabian Sea! At first it may seem a little scary, but you will be astonished at how easily your body has adapted to this salty environment. Many regular sea swimmers report that sea swimming is actually easier and after swimming in the sea, pool swimming gets boring!
Q) Are there jellyfish in the sea? / Is there a jellyfish season?
It is possible that you may encounter jellyfish during your session. The rising sea temperature, loss of natural predators and increased plastic waste in the sea has led to a steady rise in jellyfish population over the years and there is no defined season for them anymore.
Q) What to do if I get stung by a jellyfish?
Stay calm. Moon jellyfish stings are more of a nuisance than a life threatening condition. You may feel a fleeting burning/ stinging sensation on your skin, which can range from a tiny momentary itch to similar to touching a hot pan. Each person reacts differently. Report your situation to the nearest instructor to you, all our instructors are trained in handling jellyfish stings and we always carry a first aid box with us.
Q) Why do we have to wear swimming caps?
You are asked to wear bright coloured swimming caps, so that coaches/ rescue personnel can spot you in the water.
Q) Is it mandatory to use a swim buddy/swim buoy /tow-float?
No, if you come for our swims, it is not mandatory to use a swim buddy/swim buoy /tow-float; unless specified by the team for specific swims.
Q) Is there a safe time to swim?
Swimming in Goa is only permitted during daylight hours, between the months of mid October and May.
Q) Is there a place to keep my belongings and changing/ shower facilities?
The place where we operate from has limited storage for belongings, we advise our swimmers to leave their valuables in their vehicle/ hotel room and only carry a towel, swim goggles, a bright swimming cap, sunscreen, personal water bottle and a change of clothes. There are no formal showers/ changing rooms at the location but guests staying at The Bambolim Beach Resort (200 meters from our location) can avail of their facilities.
Q) Is there a place for me to park my vehicle?
Yes, limited parking is available at our swimming location
Q) Does GOWSC only hold sessions in Goa?
If you would like our team to travel to your city and hold a session there, we would be more than willing and happy to build this community of open water swimmers! Please email us with your request, and let’s roll with the waves!
Q) Should I swim on an empty stomach?
Refrain from eating right before a swim, as you may feel unwell during the swim. Eat at least 20 minutes prior to getting into the sea.
Q) Is it possible to swim during the monsoons?
We suspend our operations during the monsoons. The beaches in Goa are shut from 1 June, till the main monsoons subside. We do not schedule our events during this period - as the waters are extremely rough and unpredictable.
Enjoy swimming for swimming’s sake. We have to spend far too much time in the water to not enjoy the process challenging yourself of moving through the water. – Jeff Rouse
